Hol Chan's four designated zones — the reef cut, seagrass beds, mangrove forest, and Shark Ray Alley — function as interconnected nurseries where juvenile snappers, parrotfish, and Nassau groupers mature before migrating to deeper waters. The reserve's shallow depth, averaging three to six meters, allows snorkelers to observe brain coral heads the size of small cars and schools of blue tang that gather in synchronized feeding patterns. Southern stingrays bury themselves in sandy patches, and nurse sharks rest beneath coral overhangs during daylight hours, emerging at dusk to hunt crustaceans along the reef floor. Conservation fees collected at entry points fund patrol boats, mooring buoy maintenance, and coral propagation projects that have replanted more than 15,000 coral fragments since 2015, creating measurable improvements in live coral coverage across degraded sections of the reserve.
